In the last few years, two major disasters
occurred in Québec: the ice storm and the Saguenay
flood.
1998 Ice Storm
From January 5 to 9, 1998, several centimetres of ice (ten
in some places!) fell on southwestern Québec. The affected
regions were Montréal, the Montérégie,
the Estrie, Laval, the Laurentides and Lanaudière.
Big layers of ice formed on the ground and on electric lines,
causing three million people to experience a major power failure!

1999 Saguenay Flood
From July 19 to 20, 1996, the SaguenayLac-Saint-Jean
region experienced torrential rainfall. The amount of rain
was so important that this disaster came to be known as the
deluge. La Baie (in the Saguenay region) was the most
affected municipality. In some places, the water level reached
six metres in only a few hours. The strong water current swept
along numerous roads, houses and bridges. Six people died
during this disaster.
